Find out how to keep your synthetic or fake turf in Brisbane at its best all year round with our proven top tips.
The most effective way to keep your synthetic grass fresh is to clean it every week or so. Make these tasks part of your weekly or fortnightly schedule, depending on the time of year and the weather:
It's not a good idea to use a domestic or industrial vacuum cleaner on your fake Brisbane turf. The power from the suction can cause damage to the individual grass blades and lead to bald patches.
Artificial lawns are pet-friendly and are far less likely to break down due to pet waste. Always remove solid waste in the usual ways ie: with a doggy bag or specialist scooper. Next, hose down the area to get rid of the residue. A hosing down will also be sufficient to get rid of more minor accidents.
If a pet continues to always use the same spot day after day, you might start noticing an unpleasant smell there. If that happens, wash the area down with a cloth or sponge using a solution of equal parts, white vinegar and water.
Do let us know if you have pets that are likely to have regular, unaccompanied access to the artificial lawn before any installation. There may be some extra recommendations we can make to help mitigate pet-related issues.
You should always aim to clean up any spills straight away to stop them from dissolving into the material of your synthetic turf.
Get rid of any solid material and mop up any excess liquid with an old towel. Quickly rinse away the spill by hosing the area down with water.
For anything sticky, such as tree sap or gum, use an aerosol refrigerant to freeze it and then scrape it off. Again, rinse well afterwards.
Scrub any stubborn stains with a weak solution of mild dish or clothes washing liquid. Eco-friendly cleaners or a detergent you'd use on woollens or silk will work well when mixed with water. Rinse off with fresh water, and when dry, run over the area with a stiff brush to keep the blades looking their best. Never use bleach on your artificial turf.
It's unusual for synthetic turf to suffer from mold, even in Brisbane where humidity levels can be high. If it happens, more often than not, it'll be due to leftover food or pet waste that has bacteria growing in it. Spray an affected area with a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water, then rinse with a hose.
If you don't nip mould in the bud, perhaps if you're away for a long period, you may need to treat it with hydrogen peroxide. Do this carefully by applying a little on a sponge in a small area and then rinse thoroughly. Bear in mind that when any hydrogen peroxide sits too long on artificial grass, it could cause discoloration.
